Proteas vs West indies ODI series preview

The Betway ODI series between SA and West Indies gets underway with the first ODI in East London on Thursday. This series will form part of both teams' preparation for the World cup later this year although both teams still need to qualify for the World cup.

The West Indies depend on New Zealand, Netherlands, and Bangladesh to win their remaining matches so that they can seal the last direct qualification spot, which is looking unlikely. The Proteas control their own faith as they still have 2 matches left against the Netherlands and if they win those 2 matches comfortably, they should be able to seal the last qualification spot providing New Zealand and Bangladesh win one match in their series against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

This ODI series will provide some much need confidence to whoever wins and should allow them to build going forward as they look to find the right combinations for the world cup. The Proteas will be experimenting with their team for the first 2 ODIs as they have rested all senior players except for Captain Bavuma, De Kock, Van der Dussen  Ngidi and Shamsi. This will be interesting to see how the fresh faces do and what they bring to the team.

The West Indies have a more experienced side but are starting off under a new captain in Shai Hope and have been struggling off late in ODI cricket and have lost 8 out of their last 12 ODIs with 3 wins coming against a depleted Netherlands which raises a lot of concern for the West Indies when it comes to ODI cricket.

Proteas will be favourites to win even with their young squad as they have a very inspirational leader in Temba who they respect a lot, and he has repaid the faith in the way he has led the way in restoring the Proteas sinking ship and putting them on the right path to sealing the last direct qualification spot for the World Cup.

My 11 for the Proteas team I feel this is a good combination as Reeza and Stubbs can also bowl some off spinners and I believe they were bowling in the nets in the lead up to the series opener. I expect the pitch in East London to offer assistance to the spinners.

My Predicted 11s for the first match tomorrow is

Proteas: 1: Quinton De Kock, 2: Temba Bavuma, 3: Reeza Hendricks, 4: Rassie Van der Dussen, 5: Ryan Rickelton, 6: Tristan Stubbs, 7: Marco Jansen, 8: Bjorn Fortuin, 9: Gerald Coetzee, 10: Lungi Ngidi, 11: Tabriz Shamsi

West Indies: 1: Shai Hope, 2: Brandon King, 3: Kyle Mayers, 4: Shamarh Brooks, 5: Nicholas Pooran, 6: Rovman Powell, 7:  Janson Holder, 8: Akeal Hosein, 9: Romario Shepard, 10: Oden Smith, 11: Yannic Cariah
