Proteas vs England 1st Test post-match review

Proteas wrapped up a dominating innings and 12-run win in two and half days against England to go 1-0 up in the 3-match series.  This match was won by an excellent performance from Proteas' bowling attack as they didn't give England batsmen a chance to dictate terms during both innings. The match was set up after an excellent effort by Proteas lower order who gave them a 161-run first-inning lead.

This Morning Proteas resumed on 289-7 and lost the wicket of Rabada very quickly but Jansen and Nortje managed to frustrate the England bowlers as their partnership was worth 29 runs before Jansen was out 2 runs short of his maiden half-century. The last pair of Nortje and Ngidi add a further 8 runs before Ngidi was the last man out for a 6-ball duck as Proteas were bowled out for 326 a lead of 161.

England to play 12 overs before lunch and lost the wickets of Crawley and Pope as Elgar bringing Maharaj on to bowl in the 7th over proved to be the undoing of both Crawley and Pope as both were out LBW to Maharaj who bowled a spell of 3 overs 2-6 as England went into Lunch in a spot of bother.

Ngidi got the big wicket of Root soon after lunch as England were reduced to 57-3. Nortje was then introduced into the attack and after mixed start in his first 2 overs, Nortje found his Rhythm and blew the England middle order away as during the 25th over of the innings he bowled the fastest over of the decade in test cricket with an average speed of 95mph/152Kmph. In the fast and furious spell, Nortje picked up the wickets of Bairstow, Lees and Foakes.

Rabada and Jansen then put in the finishing touches to Nortje's demolition work as Rabada got rid of the last recognized English batsman Captain Stokes as England crashed to a humiliating defeat in their own backyard. Rabada also got the wicket of Broad who looked like he would provide Stokes with some assistance in bringing England back into the game. Jansen got the wickets of Potts and Anderson. The wicket of Anderson being the last of the match to seal the innings and 12-run win for Proteas.

The Proteas 4 fast bowlers (Rabada, Ngidi,Nortje,Jansen) have the potential to become one of the most feared in world cricket as they cover all bases add to that the spin twin of Maharaj and Harmer and the Proteas are looking very good from a bowling point of view. If the Proteas batsmen can play their part and put the runs on the board it won't be easy beating this Proteas side in any conditions. The most testing will be when they tour the subcontinent for test series. For now, the Proteas future looks bright and hopeful, the CSA board can see this and organize more tests for the Proteas to play.
